Out of sight, out of mind: the oceans need your help

As highlighted in recent controversial Netflix documentary ‘Seaspiracy’, one of the main issues the ocean faces is that this beautiful, vast, cerulean mass masks the devastation which lays beneath. It seems it really is a case of out of sight and out of mind as mankind continues to overfish, dump waste (over 8 million tons of rubbish per day!) and pollute the oceans.

The 8th June marks the UN World Ocean Day, with this year’s theme being ‘Life and Livelihoods’. Covering over 70% of the planet, the ocean truly is the life source of mankind and thus needs to be respected. 90% of big fish populations have been destroyed and over 50% of the coral reef. To readdress this issue and save our oceans, mankind needs to act now. The purpose of world ocean day it to highlight and educate the general public to the peril the ocean is in with a declaration of intentions being published which launches a decade of challenges to get the Sustainable Development Goal 14, “Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources”, by 2030.

So what can you do? Look out for the sustainable fishing logo when shopping, purchase products which are plastic free and use reusable bags where possible. Conserve water: turn taps off when not in use, take shorter showers and use a water butt to collect water for your garden. Reduce the number of pollutants entering the ocean by selecting products with non-toxic chemicals. Be a responsible traveller, clean up after yourself when visiting beaches and natural spaces, take photos at a safe distance away from animals and take part in eco-tourism activities which support local communities.

Finally, spread the world, educating others about our oceans will help to readdress the balance of respect between mankind and the oceans. The more active you are in your conversation, the more others will become aware. Why not use social media to raise awareness and reach hundreds of friends at the click of a button? Make the topic of oceans the elephant in every room and get people talking about it.
